Sachatamia Lodge is a wonderful privately-owned ecological reserve only 1½ hours from Quito and covers 120 ha. of mountain cloud forest at an altitude of 1700 m.

Itinerary

Early departure to take the old Nono-Mindo road, a well-known birding road that descends the west slope of the Andes from Quito that leads to the rich Montane and Cloud Forests. These are the habitat of the Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Dark-backedWood-Quail, Purplebibbed Witetip, Gorgeted Sunangel, Giant Antpitta,Tanager Finch,Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Toucan Barbet, and the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan.
Road birding with a snack and box lunch. Mid afternoon arrival to Sachatamia Lodge, a cozy, rustic refuge in union with the natural environment, located within the ecological reserve of the same name.
On day two, after an early breakfast, drive to the Valley of Mindo, with road birdwatching and after a snack, return to Quito.

One of the main attractions at Sachatamia are the hundreds of bird species that inhabit the exuberant protected forest, aside from the agoustis, ant eaters, armadillos and deer.

One of the two LEK (a place of courtship and reproduction among birds) registered in Ecuador as pertaining to the Umbrella Bird Longuipendulo is found within the reserve.

Recently the birth of an umbrella bird was witnessed by the scientific community.
