As this was not enough, Quito was designated a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. Together with Krakow, Quito was the first city to be honored with such a title.Quito, officially San Francisco de Quito, is the capital of Ecuador and was founded in 1534.

It has a population of approximately 1,500,000, making it the second most populous city in Ecuador after Guayaquil. The elevation of the city reaches 2,850 m. (about 9,350 ft.), making Quito the second highest capital city in the world.

Iglesia La Compañia

This church was constructed by the Jesuits between 1605 and 1765, in the heart of Quito's historical center. Its elaborate baroque facade was sculpted in stone by indigenous hands. This temple was closed from 1767 to 1807 due to the banishment of Jesuits from Ecuador. It was re-opened by the Chilean friar Camilo Henriquez, from the Order of Buenamuerte, who later participated in the independence struggles of his native land.

The facade is a marvel of the American barroque and plateresque styles. Six columns of Salomon flank the main entrance, and this was the first time that these pillars had been incorporated into American architectural styling. On entering the temple one is dazzled bye the marvelous harmony of baroque richness and balance, all in gold. Beautiful decoration abounds, covering every inch of the altar-pieces, the chapels, the columns and the dome of the transept, the choir and the tribunes.

Thousands of people visit the church every day, due to its central location, and its attractive architecture makes it popular with tourists.
