The six lines that make up our zip lining course will take us across 2000 meters (approximately one and a fourth miles). Day 5: Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu
Morning: After breakfast at our hotel it’s off to the train station where we will board the Vistadome train for the one and a half hour scenic journey to Machu Picchu. As we approach this well preserved Inca archeological site, the valley through which we have been traveling turns into a canyon and the vegetation changes to a cloud forest. Our late morning arrival will give us nearly the entire day to explore this breathtaking Incan citadel which has given rise to more speculation than any other Peruvian site (except for possibly the Nasca Lines). An optional hike is available to Huayna Picchu. Anyone interested can make arrangements with the local guide. The cost (outside of the overall tour cost is $60.00).
Evening: After our full day of exploring Machu Picchu, we will head down to the town of Aguas Calientes for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Machu Picchu / Sacre Valley / Cuzco, Horseback Riding
Morning: After breakfast in our hotel, we will return to the Machu Picchu ruins for some additional touring. Those interested in shopping may opt to tour the shops in lieu of the tourist sites, noting that the shopping in Ollantaytambo is less elaborate than in Cuzco. In the late morning we board the train for the return trip to the Sacred Valley, arriving close to the equestrian center where we will embark on a 2 to 3 hour spectacular horseback ride. Our ride will begin with some basic instruction for those of us who are unfamiliar with the joys of horseback riding or are novices. The Andean ride that we will experience has been described as “the smoothest riding….in the world in one of the most fascinating regions of the Andes, the Sacred Valley of the Andes.”
Evening: Dinner and over night at our hotel.
Day 7: Cuzco / Puno
Morning: We will have breakfast at our hotel then it’s back to the airport for our domestic flight to Puno, on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest altitude lake. Upon arrival in Puno, we will be met by an TOURS UNLIMITED representative and transferred to our hotel. Barely on the ground in Puno, we will be instantly taken with the city’s beauty, charm, archeological remains, historic monuments, traditional Andean architecture, and the people: humble, poor and kind. It will be quickly apparent why Puno has the reputation of being the ”Folklore Capital of Peru.”
The rest of the day is free to pick and choose activities as we wish. Exploring and shopping will be available in Puno for those so desiring. Our local host will direct us to the best points of interest and shopping venues. An optional half day of kayaking on Lake Titicaca can be arranged for anyone interested. As this is an optional activity the cost of transfer to the put-in site, the kayak rental, and the guide will be outside of the cost of the tour package cost.
Day 8: Puno
Morning: After breakfast in our hotel, we will head out to visit the two better known of the small floating islands, made of packed totora, in Lake Titicaca: the Uros and the Taquile Islands, where, traditionally, the men have been devoted to agriculture and fishing, and the women to weaving. The locals have developed an original form of “communal tourism”, in which visitors share their food, homes, customs and traditions. Noon: Our exploration of the floating islands will include a stop for lunch.
Evening: Tonight’s dinner will be in a restaurant and then it’s back to our hotel for the night.
Day 9: Puno, Horseback riding among the Sillustani Ruins
Morning: Breakfast will be served at our hotel. Today’s activity will be an equestrian one that will enable us to explore, along with our guide, the spectacular area and take in some incredible panoramic views of the Uyumayo Lagoon along the archaeological complex of Sillustani and some local family homes before returning to Puno.
Day 10: Puno Sightseeing, Transfer to Lima, International Departure
Morning: After breakfast, we’ll do a final tour of Puno where we will visit some of the city’s most interesting sites, such as the 16th century cathedral, the Dreyer Museum (which has an impressive collection of pottery from the Tiwanaku, Pukara, Koalla and Lupaka cultures), the Casa Del Conde de Lemus, La Casa del Corregidor, Cerrito El Huajsapata (natural observatory of Puno’s city) and El Arco Deustua. At the appropriate time we will be transferred back to the airport for our flight to Lima where we will connect with our international flights.
