With an investment of around 2 million dollars, the Municipality of Quito inaugurated the new Center of Contemporary Art. This new museum is located in a building that was catalogued as part of the architectural patrimony of Quito and hosted the old Military hospital. 400 workers fully restored this building in an area of around 10,500 square meters.
The architect Francisco Schmith designed this building and its construction started in the year 1900 and finished in 1929. Its edification and distribution scheme was unique for the time built with the idea of the free flow of natural light and ventilation throughout all the building.
Right now, the museum is hosting a contemporary exhibit that uses graphic and audiovisual resources providing historical information about “Quito’s Revolution” against the Spanish Monarchy on August 10th, 1809. This exhibition will last until September 2009, year that will commemorate the bicentenary of this important day for Ecuador’s history.
